Louis Vuitton’s Foundation reveals a thousand and one sides of Cindy Sherman

The world-renowned photographer, American Cindy Sherman can be spotted behind the camera as easily as she becomes the model, makeup artist, stylist or director. In three decades of career, dominated by a humor with a provocative undertone, she was already a Renaissance madonna, decadent socialite, but she also presented herself dressed as a clown or a monk. Sherman uses her own body as model for her photographer work, but the images she presents are not self-portraits. They are rather multiple expressions of the self of the artist captured by the lenses. Starting on the 2^nd of April up until the 31^st of August, these and other Cindy Sherman’s personas arise live and in color in the Louis Vuitton’s Foundation, in Paris, in a retrospective exhibition (1975-2020), the first in France in a space of 14 years. The scenography of the 1500 m² venue dedicated to the exhibition was designed in collaboration with the artist to uncover not only artwork from the beginning of the 2010s as well as some more recent work, some of them first-of-its-kind. There will be exposed 170 pieces with articulated imagery that integrate series as iconic as the “Headshots”, “Clowns”, “History Portraits”, “Society Portraits”, “Fashion” or “Flappers”, a new series displays masculine figures and couples. Concurrently, in the “Crossing Views” section, a dialogue is proposed between the foundation’s own art collection – that assembles pieces from around 60 French and international artists – and Cindy Sherman herself. The portrait theme is approached in multimedia format resourcing to paintwork, photography, sculpture, video and installations. An exhibition tailored to photography and multiple artistic expressions’ lovers that some hope to contemplate in a digital layout. Among the measures enacted by the French Government, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Louis Vuitton’s Foundation will remain closed until further notice.
